ABOUT
Once operating as Pearl Brewery, this 19th century brew house provided a wealth of history and patina for the conversion to a 147-room luxury hotel. Located in San Antonio, we were inspired by the city’s culture, the beauty of the adjacent River Walk, and the richness of the site which includes the Culinary Institute of America, Farmer’s Market, Amphitheater, and unparalleled restaurants.
A new connecting building was constructed to house the hotel rooms. The dialogue between the new and old building was critical during design, with care not to replicate the unique conditions of the original brewery, but create an experience that could stand up to the original building’s history and richness.
Monumental walls with layers of preserved worn paint are the backdrop for industrial elements from the brewery’s operational days. These elements became sculptural and functional relics: bottle holders turned chandeliers in the Ballroom, brewing tanks carved open to become banquette lounges, pipe and tanks flanking the arched brick opening to the lounge. Artifacts uncovered during demolition were salvaged and put on display.
The project features 3 food and beverage spaces, a Library, Demonstration Kitchen, Pool Deck, Fitness Center, Ballroom, Conference Rooms, and several outdoor spaces.
